Below are more images create with my "Studio Camera". The original image size is very large
although they are downsized here to the same size as the ones above from the "Sports Camera".
I do not have all competitors and have only one or two images per competitor. The goal was
to get nice close up images.....   They can print wall size if required.

I am clearing some space on this server ... the other images are partially loaded.
Sorry that this takes a moment but I load rather large images and am still on dial-up.
Telstra is just pathetic .. anyway .. it will all be online eventually ..

I offer poster prints  up to 120cm high and 240cm wide. It is possible with my material .. easy ...

Thank you for visiting one of my picture sites. Please let me first explain a little bit what my photography is all about.

I seek the thrill of improving my skills and experiences as well as the quality of my results and I enjoy to share the pleasure of looking at an image and especially at a sports person in full swing. I do not seek the sensation of a mishap  like a paddler swimming behind the boat or worse. Sure this is part of the story and sometimes one of these images may slip through my filters but generally I do not care for such images. I am not a news photographer or paparazzi and seek to get a laugh out of the mishap of others. I try to portrait the skill, the effort, the concentration, the passion and the motivation of people, and not only in sports. I use this website to share images which I create, because it is very frustrating for people out in the field seeing me with a high end camera creating pictures and not being able to share them. This is how it started and this is how I will keep it. There is a distinct difference in creating pictures or taking a snap of a situation.

Pursuing that special image, which is good enough to make me feel like opening a parcel at Christmas is my passion and along the way I simply make a few extras because it is very disappointing for competitors to see only a few. I stay for the last one coming along, so I did this time too, because I consider it a matter of compassion and respect. I try to create mages which are interesting and different

and I try to develop a certain technique for each occasion. I am far from being happy with my results in some areas but to advance quicker is difficult for me because I would have to go out more but have only limited opportunities as far as my current schedule goes. However I will in the future.

Every time I come to an event again I try to improve on the previous results. The first time is always just learning and under-standing what a specific sport is all about.

Last year I have tried to get sequences through the rapids from each competitor and I ended up with more than 8000 images. Processing these images is not that easy and I ended up with images on the web which are slightly yellow/green. Not so the originals which I supply. They are always spot on in colour. This year I simply did not feel like doing another 8000 images and to do sequences, because that becomes boring quickly. This year I wanted to focus more on technical image quality as well as a "studio" type look of the images. I also have experimented a little with panning the power boats, which is hard to do and one gets a lot of "bad" shots. I could afford a lot of bad shots this year because I friend helped me to make sure we get enough shots of all our mates in the race as well as the others. He used a high end sports camera to do that and I had the opportunity to use one of my high resolution cameras with maximum quality.

One has to understand that this is quite an undertaking, because each image has some 17 Megabytes compressed (RAW) data. I will explain a little more further down for the experts. As a comparison: many digital point and shoot cameras use 128MB cards. I would only fit 6-7 images on such a card. This gives an idea of the volume of data I am going through using one of my high end cameras and also it is not as fast as using a smaller 12 or 8 mega pixel JPG file.

This year I will also attempt to colour correct the images better and have the online versions more accurate and not only the large ones. I also will publish larger versions this year since I do not have as many as last year (probably around 2000 this year).

I also have limits on the server holding this site, since it is only a hobby machine and it has only around 800 Gigabyte  of disk space. However I plan to use one of my other machines for the hobby side as soon as I decommission one from my production applications. (This has nothing to do with photography though). I am currently working on a new concept of presenting images on the web in high resolution and I have given a sample on this page (further down). You need to have Macromedia Flash 7 installed to see it. It is not yet the fastest application but it works and lets you explore images in more detail, even on a dial up line.

I hope you all like the images.
There are some misconceptions about my efforts and this site, which I became aware of recently. Unlike some people think my images are FREE. I only ask for cost coverage for the creation, packing, mailing of a CD with the High Resolution images for one competitor or a group of competitors, as I have to pay for the box, print and creation of the CD. These images are way to big to put on a server and the ones from my High Resolution camera can be up to 98 Megabyte per image depending on the purpose. I do not charge for the images on the website. Everyone is free to download them. In the future I try to make larger files available but so far I am still on dial up (Thank you Telstra) and simply can not do it. I expect ADSL soon, so it will become easier. My servers are on a fast line, so download is not an issue.

If you should have any questions just email me.  gmd@perthdigital.com

Thank you for following me to here. Now a little more about this years images.

This is an example of a pan image, where I use a slow shutter speed and follow the boat to keep it in focus but blurring the background. Very hard to do and I have a lot of blurred shots, but also a few good ones. The effect is not as impressive in the small version of this image as it is in a larger version. Small images do not have the detail and also do not show such effects well. This image was created using one of my high resolution cameras (17 mega pixel). It prints "wall size" and can be transferred for example onto a Venetian blind. There are companies around doing that. It's a nifty decoration. Just to clarify here: I do not have any relationship to such a business. Some people might assume that.

I use this image below to let you "zoom in" to some detail. It is NOT the maximum image size. The image was already reduced and compressed to a 1.2MB jpg file for faster upload.  In the sample below the "milky area" can not be zoomed into. This is not done to prevent you from looking at the full image, but to avoid that my little server (its an older dual XEON system with only 2 Gig RAM) does not choke to death when this image is zoomed into buy many visitors.

This is an example of a paddler image, created with my High Resolution camera in a studio type fashion. It's like a portrait style image with limited depth of field to focus the viewers' eyes onto a point of interest. Again, the small version here on the web does not do justice to the original.

I have also provided the "zoom in"  function for this image further down this page, just for the fun of it.

I will process all images in the next couple of weeks and I can tell you already: they are stunning to look at. All "bad" images will not be processed anyway.  You will all look good and actually you all do. It is really amazing how many smiles I caught and how great everyone looked.  I hope my images can convey this only a little bit.

IMPORTANT FOR VIEWING

Below is the link for the first image. Please wait until the image is completely visible, also under the lupe, and the "active" area of the image (the non milky part) is visible. Then you can move the lupe and use the Up Arrow Key or Down Arrow Key to zoom in or zoom out. The viewer shows when its loading more data. Let it settle for a moment until the section under the loupe becomes sharp. When you move to quickly you are requesting too many sections of the image and your computer might not cope well and slow down.

If the browser shows only BLACK and nothing else after you have clicked on the link below you need to install Macromedia Flash Player 7. Sorry. The tool works. If it does not work for you then it is a problem with your browser or computer.

Here is the second image for inspection. Again, this is NOT the maximum size. it is a reduced and compressed size of around 1MB where the TIFF image is  48 Mega Byte (in 8bit) with no compression and jpg artifacts. In case this is all too technical for you then just don't worry about it and enjoy the images.

I have done already some posters for people we know and also experimented with images I liked from a technical point of view. Here some samples.

The collages are between 100 and 110 cm wide and 60cm hide. I can go up to 120 cm high if required. I can not print larger than that although the images are plenty good for a billboard.

Each full version is around 300 Megabyte. I have made one available for you to check out with my "zoom in" facility. NOTE: SLOW SLOW SLOW because the file size is massive.  The image is 12000 pixels wide and I have given full access to all sections, which slows down the server even more. Please be patient.

You can zoom in two steps up to full resolution of the 110 cm wide image.

Click here to load the viewer for the poster sample.

Note: The number of images per competitor varies. Please don't be disappointed when we do not even have one good one. It may happen.

I hope you liked the images above. All others will be uploaded over the next 8 - 10 days (I hope).

Thank you for visiting.
